Generic domain names auction
An auction is being conducted CLOSING 31st JANUARY 2002 to allow use of names that represent a commercial category occupation or industry. See update in April 2002

The New Domain Name Policy to be introduced during 2002 will alllow generic names which previously have been prohibited. As a transitional measure all applications for generic names which have been refused (totalling 3006 and including names such as shopping.com.au, sport.com.au, menswear.com.au, nuts.com.au ) will be made availalble through an auction process.
The names are listed at www.stuff.com.au/auda.asp.
You must register your interest by 31 Janaury 2002 with an auction to occur later.  If no one else is interested then you can apply for the normal fee of $110.
If you might gain some marketing or business advantage by use of one of these generic names, there is no cost at this stage to register.  The only restiction seems to be that your name on 13 August 2001 must have some connection - but that rule does not seem to be any different than a normal application.
